Copper for Immune Function

RESEARCH

  • Your body needs copper to build red blood cells and fight oxidative stress, but the sweet spot is narrow—too little breaks these processes, too much can damage cells, so getting it right from food matters more than supplementing.

COMMUNITY

  • People report mixed results—some feel dramatically better with copper or liver, others see no change or need to balance it carefully with zinc.

SAFETYHigh copper supplements can interfere with zinc absorption and cause nausea; if you take supplements or have Wilson's disease, check with your doctor first.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

ALL 8 ON PUBMED ↗
01

Copper is essential for hemoglobin synthesis, iron oxidation, cellular respiration, and antioxidant defense across multiple organ systems.

02

Copper deficiency impairs function of copper-binding enzymes; excess copper triggers cuproptosis, a novel cell-death pathway with potential cancer-fighting applications.

03

Dietary copper bioavailability is 65-70%; copper chelators improve vascular function and alleviate diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiomyopathy.

04

Intracellular copper levels are tightly regulated by transporters and chaperones; both deficiency and excess lead to cellular dysfunction and disease.

Anecdotally, of course, but I have struggled with anaemia for many years and when I finally tried a low-dose copper supplement I had the best sleep of my life and finally felt like I had the energy of my "old self". I'm too scared to take it regularly as don't want to poison myself. I grew up in an old house with copper pipes and then moved somewhere without them and I did start wondering about that.

If you don't want to supplement copper then eat some liver each day. Tastes horrendous but for me personally it transformed my health. My iron levels all normalised. My histamine reactions dropped by atleast 70%. No more insane fatigue etc. It's a nutrient bomb so just start with a low dose of like 20-30g a day. Basically one bite. That's all I do. I cook a batch and freeze it. I take a 30g chunk out and just swallow it before my meal. I would say that liver done much more than any drug I have ever tried. By far

This is interesting. I started supplementing with 2.5mg of copper earlier this year after testing at 90.6 ug/DL (not low but not optimal. I was already taking 25mg of Zinc but stopped briefly when I started taking the copper…. big mistake. Within a couple days I had absolutely raging irritability over the smaller of things… just pure anger and frustration all day. Re-started zinc and felt fine again within a few days. Haven’t retested copper levels since but I presume will be higher now… but I have to admit I don’t really feel any different from it.
