Iron Supplements for Hair Growth

RESEARCH

  • Iron deficiency may contribute to hair loss, but there's no solid proof that iron supplements alone regrow hair—you need to fix the underlying deficiency first, not just self-treat.

COMMUNITY

  • Mixed results: some see real hair growth after supplementing, but others emphasize fixing the root cause and monitoring levels with a doctor matters most.

SAFETYIron supplements can cause constipation and nausea, and shouldn't be taken without a blood test first—too much iron is also harmful, so work with your doctor to check levels.

yes! I've also battled iron deficiency and I get so frustrated when I see people on haircare forums recommend taking an iron supplement. If someone's hair issues are due to iron deficiency, treating iron deficiency is often more involved than just taking a self-prescribed supplement. You need to monitor your ferritin levels and also find out the root cause and address it if possible. NOTE: this is not medical advice, nor is it an invitation for others to advise me. Please work with your doctor to diagnose and treat a health condition like iron deficiency.

Thinning temples and crown, I’ve been supplementing iron pillls for about 4 months and see a lot of hair growth. Way thicker then it’s been in years

I noticed my hairline and temples looked really sparse one day at work two months after Covid. I figured it would come back and after 2 years it didn't, I checked my iron and my ferritin is 10. I've been on iron since Feb and so far the regrowth is minimal but I hardly have any shedding for a while. I'm also getting older and in perimenopause but I'm trying to think positive. I get my ferritin checked again Tues and I'm hoping it has gotten better. I'm tired of obsessing about my hair.
