Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Lymphedema

RESEARCH

  • MLD helps shrink swelling from breast cancer and surgery, but studies use different methods making it hard to compare, and whether it actually prevents lymphedema remains unclear.

COMMUNITY

  • People report personal benefits like reduced bloating, though most acknowledge limited scientific evidence and suggest trying it yourself.

SAFETYGenerally safe for most people, but those with active infection, blood clots, or certain cancers should check with their doctor first.

**Research:** [Manual Lymphatic Drainage](https://www.amtamassage.org/publications/massage-therapy-journal/research-update-lymph-drainage/), there’s a bunch of studies out there, but this presents some current ones in a somewhat TLDR format…scroll to the bottom if you want links to the studies referenced.

I haven’t done too much whole body work but I dry brush about once a month. I also do gua sha or facial massage. It definitely helps with bloating on my face. It takes about 5 min for a quick massage, or 15 if I do it for longer. It’s amazing what taking care of the lymphatic system can do for you!

I have no articles or studies to share, but the lymphatic system is a big focus in Eastern medicine. For some reason it is completely ignored in Western medicine. I'm not educated enough on the subject to tell you any more, but the research I've done has suggested that it is a very important system that benefits from being cared for. I hope you try it out for yourself. :)

Add context that might help others — skin type, conditions like PCOS, what you'd tried before. The more specific, the more useful.
