Collagen for Joint Health

RESEARCH

  • Collagen is crucial for joints and skin, but swallowed collagen may break down in your stomach before reaching joints—the real benefit likely depends on your overall diet and weight.

COMMUNITY

  • Mixed views: some report benefits from hydrolyzed collagen for gut/skin, others question anti-aging effects and prefer whole food sources.

SAFETYGenerally safe for most adults, but check with your doctor if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to the collagen source (often fish or bovine).

COMMUNITY SENTIMENT

55% positive

The recently marketed "Collagen Peptide" products use patented ways of processing the collagen containing tissues of animals, and there is recent research about them having beneficial effects; some of which is not substantial. Regular Beef Gelatin already has decades of research on the same benefits. The ideas in research (which is all funded by the patent-holders) are that the collagen in their products is more fully hydrolyzed, with more short-chain collagen peptides, and that some specific peptides exert stronger effects.

U/GOZENKA

Theyre legit, but less effective than drinking bone broth. And chicken and mutton collagen isn’t as potent as beef ones. I have the Beef Hydrolysed collagen from vital proteins and it’s been a boon for my gut, hair, skin, nails etc. Vegetarian collagen is a total scam so don’t even bother with that

There have been many studies that exogenous collagen doesn't help in anti aging. Just buy some retinoids bro.

Add context that might help others — skin type, conditions like PCOS, what you'd tried before. The more specific, the more useful.
